Μαρία Α. Νικολαΐδου
Maria A. Nikolaidis is the daughter of Apostolos Nikolaidis, a New York-born
design director, educator, and the author of Apostolos Nikolaidis: The Authentic
Laïká Singer Who Was Never Censored (Marilou Press, 2022).
Born in New York City and raised for a period in Athens, Maria returned to the
United States for her design education. Her book project, which she has called
her life’s work, spanned more than a decade: digitizing the family archive,
conducting research in libraries in Greece, the United States, and Canada,
interviewing musicians and witnesses, and designing the entire book bilingually
in Greek and English.
“Being an artist and providing moments of joy to others, especially through
music, is one of the highest forms of human achievement. […] I knew that to do
my father’s story justice and encapsulate important historical aspects that existed outside Greece’s borders, it was I who was going to do
this book.”
— Maria Nikolaidis, from an interview with The National Herald
Apostolos Nikolaidis is her first book as author, and the inaugural
title from Marilou Press, an independent publisher in New York
City.
Appearing on national Greek television in 2023, Maria spoke about her
father’s life and the making of the book.
